Thanksgiving what? What happened to the fall???

Are you kidding me, Thanksgiving already?

I can’t believe it, Thanksgiving is only a week away! Wow this year’s almost over and here we go into 2010, who saw that coming? This time of year the live shows start slowing down, and I’ll be spending more time in the studio. I’ve only got a few shows left this year, please check out the shows page to see where I’ll be and then come hang with me. One of the shows that I have left is this Saturday, that’s tomorrow people at Norty’s in St. Joe. It’s a special celebration, it’s my friend Chris Fleck’s birthday, he will be drinking and playing harmonica with me. Come celebrate this Saturdeeeee night!

I’m also getting caught up on some videos that I need to put up. I have a few songs that I recorded at the Bearcat Zone at Northwest Missouri State University at the beginning of November. The first two appear here. They are my versions of Paul Simon’s “Me & Julio” & “Cecilia”.  I play them together as a medley, but together they run a little over the 10 minute youtube mark, so I broke them down into 2 videos. You can also download the mp3 of this performance on the mp3 page.

Please rate, comment & subscribe to my youtube channel and have a great Thanksgiving! See you Saturday St. Joe.

Hug your mother day.

Hug your Mother Day.

Do you remember what you were doing three years ago today? I do. I was holding my mom’s hand for the last time. Death is a very strange thing.  It was a Thursday morning, I remember how beautiful the weather was that day, my mom had been in the hospital since Monday of that same week. We knew she was dying by Tuesday morning, we didn’t know exactly how long she would last. And that’s just it right there, none of us know how long we’re going to last. I think about my mother every day, but today is the day that I think about mortality and the abruptness and permanence of death. It is so very permanent. I remember leaving the hospital and being in total shock. Mostly I was shocked that the world was still going as fast as ever, it didn’t even miss a beat. So I’m here to tell you, actually just to remind you, as I’m sure you already know, that life is a precious gift. Every single day is an opportunity to make good choices for yourself, and more importantly every day is an opportunity for us to try to get it right.

So I’m naming today “Hug your Mother Day.” But why do we need this, we’ve already got a “Mother’s Day?” I’ll tell you why, because mothers deserve to be recognized more than just one day a year. And to be honest, I’m pretty sure the whole “Mother’s Day” thing is kind of played out. It’s a Hallmark holiday. Nothing against Hallmark, but with all of the advertising, your mom sees “Mothers Day” coming from a mile away, then you have to buy a card or some awkward gift, you have to call ahead to make reservations for brunch…it’s a whole miserable ordeal.   It’ll be so much better if she gets a call, a hug, an email, whatever today for no apparent reason. Just let her know that you’re thinking about her, and that you appreciate all of the sacrifices she made for you so that you would have the wonderful life that you have today.  Now go hug that mother of yours, because there will be a day when you will want to, but can’t.

The Pub in Maryville & Fieldhouse in Columbia!

Hey guys,

Just a quick little note here today. I’ll be coming back to the Pub in Maryville for the first time in a long time this Friday Night, November 6.  Any of you NWMSU Alums who are coming back for the game come see me, or if you’ve got younger siblings, send them to the Pub, I’m looking forward to starting a fresh new tradition up in Bearcat Country.  If you’re not coming in until Saturday, I’ll be playing at the Bearcat Zone in the Amphitheater behind the stadium at 11:00 am.

After my 11:00 am show I’ll be packing up the magnificent minivan and heading back to Columbia. It’s another Mizzou football Saturday night at Fieldhouse. You never know what’s going to happen kiddos, come on out and see me on Broadway.

It’s a big Show-Me weekend, see what I did, I incorporated the state’s motto because I’ll be spending about 12 hours in the odyssey crisscrossing this incredible state of ours. See you out there.
