Hug your Mother Day.
Do you remember what you were doing three years ago today? I do. I was holding my mom’s hand for the last time. Death is a very strange thing. It was a Thursday morning, I remember how beautiful the weather was that day, my mom had been in the hospital since Monday of that same week. We knew she was dying by Tuesday morning, we didn’t know exactly how long she would last. And that’s just it right there, none of us know how long we’re going to last. I think about my mother every day, but today is the day that I think about mortality and the abruptness and permanence of death. It is so very permanent. I remember leaving the hospital and being in total shock. Mostly I was shocked that the world was still going as fast as ever, it didn’t even miss a beat. So I’m here to tell you, actually just to remind you, as I’m sure you already know, that life is a precious gift. Every single day is an opportunity to make good choices for yourself, and more importantly every day is an opportunity for us to try to get it right.
So I’m naming today “Hug your Mother Day.” But why do we need this, we’ve already got a “Mother’s Day?” I’ll tell you why, because mothers deserve to be recognized more than just one day a year. And to be honest, I’m pretty sure the whole “Mother’s Day” thing is kind of played out. It’s a Hallmark holiday. Nothing against Hallmark, but with all of the advertising, your mom sees “Mothers Day” coming from a mile away, then you have to buy a card or some awkward gift, you have to call ahead to make reservations for brunch…it’s a whole miserable ordeal. It’ll be so much better if she gets a call, a hug, an email, whatever today for no apparent reason. Just let her know that you’re thinking about her, and that you appreciate all of the sacrifices she made for you so that you would have the wonderful life that you have today. Now go hug that mother of yours, because there will be a day when you will want to, but can’t.
